Gloucester

Gloucester is the county town of Gloucestershire, and is the 46th largest City in England. It is located on the eastern bank of the River Severn 114 miles west of London. It is sheltered by the Cotswold's to the east, while the Forest of Dean and the Malvern Hills are to the west and north-west. It is most famous for it's Cathedral, pictured below.

The city is a port, linked via a Canal to the Severn Estuary, allowing larger ships to reach the docks than would be possible on the tidal reaches of the river itself. The wharfs, warehouses and the docks themselves fell into disrepair until their renovation in the 1980s. Some warehouses now house the National Waterways Museum, others were converted into luxury residential apartments, shops and bars. The port still houses the most inland RNLI Lifeboat in the UK.

It has become a popular destination where visitors can enjoy shops, museums and refreshment places or just wander around the quays, looking at a variety of historic buildings and interesting vessels on the water. There is a Visitor Information Point in the Merchants Quay building in the centre of the site.

One of the many attractions in the city is the little shop where Beatrix Potter set her favourite story, about the Tailor of Gloucester, Simpkin the Cat and the Mice, and is situated at 9 College Court. It will be officially reopening for Easter 2007. For information tel: 01452 422856.
